Openreach a BT Group Business

Openreach is the name of BT's local access network business.  The name together with its associated identity, is intended to symbolise a more open way of operating - reaching and connecting people and businesses across the UK.  Openreach delivers services on an even- handed basis to all communications providers, including BT's own Retail and Global Services businessess.

The Challenge 

  • to change the inherited legacy of the perceived view of engineers/ engineering
  • to reflect one of the most culturally diverse countries in Europe.
  • to attract more employees from all areas of society requiring a more inclusive approach, requiring a sea- change in behaviours and attitudes

The Task:

  • to recruit over 1500 Customer Service Engineers in locations all over the UK
  • to  support and service tens of millions of residential and business customers nationwide.
  • to represent the society in which Openreach a BT Group Business, operates and their customer base.

  • look for aptitude  - not experience
  • retrain the interviewer
  • structured on the job training
  • diversity training

The Need to set Objectives

Objective:  To recruit a diverse workforce and address under representation by

  • targeting women
  • targeting ethnic minorities the reflect the local population ( nationally 15%)

 Objective :  Engage and partner with our suppliers to deliver - by

  • effective use of the media in advertising and PR
  • regular reporting
  • monitoring applications

How is success measured?

  • Openreach is a member of various organisations and wins awards for their commitment to diversity
  • by meeting recruitment objectives
