Case Study: Flexible Working - Affordable Accounts Group

Initiative Outline

Affordable Accounts was set up by a female qualified accountant who wanted to be able to work more flexibly around her family life and children. All staff work predominantly from home and work either full or part-time at suitable hours to balance their work and private lives. Hours are reviewed regularly in line with any pattern changes in staff’s own lives and the company objectives.

Achievements/Lessons learned

The company has grown rapidly over its 3 year life and now employs 8 people, all of whom are women. Most of the employees are women returners who would otherwise find it hard to gain employment in a traditional accountancy practice with restrictive hours.

There have also been benefits for clients, many of whom prefer to meet and receive accountancy advice outside traditional 9-5 working hours.

The company has been a finalist in the flexible working category of the Employers Coalition Awards and its Director has received several awards in her own right.
