As one of the top three global retailers, Tesco’s position, between producer and consumer, is well placed to lead by example and encourage widespread change in environmental behaviour. Tesco and its Chief Executive have demonstrated leadership through working with suppliers, NGOs, investors, staff and customers.
Tesco have devoted £86m to low-carbon technology, such as wind turbines and tri-generation and have launched the Sustainable Consumption Institute to examine ways to overcome the barriers preventing people going green.
Impact:-
- UK Energy usage per square foot is 50% less than 2000
- UK fleet emissions have reduced by over 10% during 2007/08
- Customer recycling has doubled, reducing carrier bag use by 25%, quadrupling energy-efficient light bulb sales and increasing green product sales by 50%.
